An interview with Doug Ferrier Life Coach

What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome in your life?

In June of 2017, I left a secure corporate job to start my own business that in less than a year hit multiple six figures in sales. Celebration time, right? Wrong! I didn’t have time. I was always “busy” and not so productive. I was working 12- to 16-hour days, and only taking two days off out of every fourteen.

The only reason I took those two days off was because I’m divorced and those 48 hours were dedicated to being a dad.  My new relationship was suffering, and I was running extremely close to burning out. I knew that something had to change, but what? In late 2017, my now fiancée and I planned a family trip with our kids to Disney World for March 2018.

It was tough to leave my business. I had picked up my largest contract ever, and I wasn’t sure I could trust anyone to be ME while I was on vacation, even though I had a highly skilled and talented individual to oversee the work while I was away.

The closer vacation time got, the more I pushed work, and the more hours I put in. I believed that I had to get an extra week’s worth of work done before my vacation. I fell for all these societal stereotypes that “being busy” was normal and the best measure of success.

While I was on vacation, I actually relaxed for the first time in a very long time; this was when I knew that I had to change things and devised a plan to change my “busy” habits into productive habits. This led to more free time, more peace of mind, and even helped the company grow.

What are your three top tips to overcome the obstacle?

My top three secrets to make this happen are:

  1. Plan your weeks in advance. If you fail to plan, you’re planning to fail.
  2. Use the Eisenhower Matrix to eliminate unnecessary tasks.
  3. Turn off ALL unnecessary phone notifications so you can be present and focused, especially for family time and work time.
