An interview with Karen Locke-Leto Life Coach
What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome in your life?
At 26, my successful husband, who worked on Wall Street, died, leaving me to raise 17-month-old twins with no job history of my own and a GED. With the help of mentors, I attended college and obtained my graduate degree. I learnt how to manage obstacles and have built a strong professional reputation as a Chief Operating Officer in a 47-year-old non-profit. I overcame shyness to now speak in front of crowds with ease.
I have spent my professional life mentoring other women and developing tools and trainings to help level the playing field. My journey has brought me to High Heels Speaking where I use my skills and experience to empower others.
What are your three top tips to overcome the obstacle?
- Trust that you have the answers within you. Create the mindset of knowing you will be fine and know in your heart you will prevail.
- Remain positive. Do not let those that have nothing positive to add to your solutions into your head. Avoid comparing yourself to others. No one has your exact experience – no one can be better than you.
- Set small goals to overcome your obstacles. See the issues as they are. Do not sugarcoat them but also do not project more energy on them than is real. Do not attempt to be a perfectionist. You do not need to figure it all out before you execute. Avoid the fear of failure. There are lessons, not failures. Life is a journey; learn to enjoy the whole trip. Everything you want is on the other side of fear.
