An interview with Roy Varner Life Coach
What is the biggest obstacle you have had to overcome in your life?
PARALYZING FEAR OF SPEAKING TO CROWDS – number one public fear, greater than even death. I was afraid to screw up, forget lines, sweat, look stupid, be humiliated, etc. I could sing on stage as Marryin’ Sam in “Li’l Abner” musical, but that was using someone else’s words and directions. That fear stifled me for years and nixed so many opportunities to learn to be a compelling speaker who touches hearts and changes lives. Eventually, the clarity of three simple facts freed me to become an effective class instructor and coach.
What are your three top tips to overcome the obstacle?
- IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU – Everyone is there with one question: “What’s in it for me?” You’re there to answer that question by stepping into their inner dialogue about an urgent pain or fear…let them know you understand from personal experience…and then offer THE solution you’ve discovered that worked for you and others and will eliminate their problem. How you look or sound isn’t the issue; how you resonate with their need and offer a transformational solution is what matters.
- IT’S NOT FOR EVERYONE – Not all people in the room have the urgent problem you’ll focus on. Those that do (your ideal customers!) will connect, respond, and love you, and that’s all that matters. The others will at least be impressed by your real, honest effort to help people. Is it worth the speaking time if you can win just one long-term, loyal customer who truly needs your solution?
- THERE’S NOTHING MORE SATISFYING – Sharing your personal experience and hard-won solution with a group of adults and having some individuals come up afterwards to buy or ask for help is a personal high. Even better is the resulting opportunity to help fellow humans get past their problems and embrace a more productive, empowering and even thriving mindset.
